Happy Cacheversary to me!

Two years ago today, [info]cortneyofeden was kind enough to introduce me to one of my most passionate loves... Geocaching! I still love it as much as I did on that glorious March day that found she and [info]emmett_the_sane and I rooting around under a Sausalito pier in high tide, looking for a submerged thermos. We didn't even find the darn thing, and still, I was hooked.

Geocaching has been a wonderful thing in my life. I've seen some truly glorious places that I'd never have known were there, otherwise. I've shared wonderful nature-inspired bliss with the many loved ones who've accompanied me on the hunt over the years. I've seen the smiles on kids' faces as they worked together to make the finds. I've improved my stamina tremendously - I can walk up hills now, whereas two years ago I could barely cover two level blocks without stopping.

I didn't make my caching goal this year - either of them. Last year, I found my 200th cache 3 days shy of my 1-year cacheversary, and so I decided that I wanted to double that and do 400 caches in my 2nd year, making it to cache #600 by my 2nd cacheversary. I'm not really all about the numbers - in general I'd rather do a couple of wonderful outback caches in a day than a handful of quick urban micros - but since geocaching is my exercise, having a numbers goal was a nice challenge towards doing a certain amount of walking.

But then I moved twice, and was in and out of the hospital a lot with that 4-month-long illness, and so I downgraded the goal to simply matching the prior year and getting to #400 by today. [info]ri_whittlesey was patiently helping me towards that last week - we did an intensive few days of geocaching together - but midway through the week we both got sick, and the weather's been awful besides. So, I'm still camped at #367. But that's ok... the fun is the most important thing, and there's sure been a wealth of that.

Maybe my next 'caching goal will have something to do with the number of miles walked while geocaching in a year. Let's make it easy and say that my goal is 50 miles - a mile a week - over the next year. (The limit is more one of time than energy, here). That'll inspire me to choose more challenging hikes, and the following year I can think about upping it to 100.

And next week is every geocacher's favorite holiday - Daylight Savings Time, which means more hours of daylight to go 'caching in! (Sorry, Emmett... I know that you aren't all that fond of the Daystar ;-)

Still my favorite geocaching picture of all time, from that very first day:

Ok, closely tied with this one, in which a security officer got in on the fun - bonus points for anyone who can name the cache!

Oh, and a plug for the local [info]geocaching_sf community, while I'm at it - as well as thegba.net, aka Geocachers of the Bay Area!

Hey, is that that micro near my office where I was like the only person who couldn't find it??

It's so hard to believe that it's been two years already. :)

I need to go caching more! I don't have any time to do it in, but the desire's still there and I still do find some on occasion.

That kind of looks like it might be Haiku Park. It's a distinctive view, I'm reasonably familiar with that parking structure at this point, and I remember you having a heck of a time with that one.

It was through the geocaching group that I met you. I'm not really a cacher, though I like the idea--I've just hit a critical mass of hobbies. ;-) But I'm glad I did. Happy cachiversary!

I'm not much of a walker, but I love games and treasure hunts, and this sure sounds like it fills the bill. How does one get started?

One starts best by going with someone who has done it before, and I'd be glad to volunteer to take you and your family 'caching sometime.

Once you decide you like the sport, what you need is a GPS receiver and some batteries (it's worth getting rechargeable batteries and a charger), and (optionally) some trinkets to trade at the caches (stickers, bouncy balls, etc). Low-cost GPS receivers can be found on craigslist in the $40-60 range.

At http://www.geocaching.com you can learn more about the sport and see what caches are in your area. For instance, here's the map of caches for one part of San Jose:

http://www.geocaching.com/map/getmap.aspx?lat=37.400283&lon=-121.946967

Essentially, someone goes out and hides a cache, and records the latitude and longitude of the cache. Then they post the location on the geocaching website. Then, other people with GPS receivers put the latitude and longitude of the cache into their GPS, and go try and find it. When you find it, you can take a trinket and leave a trinket, and sign the logbook, and you also sign the online log to let the cache hider know you found it and keep track of your own finds.

Lets look for a weekend day to go caching together!

Congrats on your cacheversary. I like that term. I'm about 3 months away from my 2 year cacheversary for myself. I set goals but very few of them are time related because this sport is not necessarily the easiest in relation to time. I currently have easy goals that just take planning to do (find all the virtuals, earthcaches, webcams, letterboxes in NJ). I'm about 2/3 of the way through but the distance make them hard to do.

The biggest goal I have is to go out and have fun. 99% of the time, that's what I do. I hope it's also your goal in caching!

Here's to your next year!

It's been a joy to see you take to it, and to see the kids having fun with it as well! :-)
